Talk on Good Governance and Integrity

In conjunction with our 12th Biennial General Meeting, NECF is conducting the following a talk on good governance and integrity for its members.

Date: 22 May 2010

About the Talk

Which political alliance do you trust - Barisan Nasional or Pakatan Rakyat? One seems to be plagued with race-polarized hardliners and political corrupt officials while the other appears to consist of low-principled lawmakers of questionable loyalty. Furthermore, the general public still fears that the latter may usher in a kind of Taliban-style of government if they ever come into power.

The issue at hand is indeed a difficult decision. While the church needs to be non-partisan, she has the duty to guide her members to exercise his or her moral citizenry in a responsible manner in matters of public justice and towards upholding a stable and responsible government. The Church as one of the institutions of society must make her presence felt and in ways appropriate challenge the powers-that-be for the welfare of the Rakyat.

To undertake this task as church, the Church must speak against all forms of corruption in all size and shape. Good governance is therefore essential. Good governance will go a long way to reducing corruption in our country. Malaysia has degenerated to 56 in Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index (CPI) last year as compared to 39 five years ago. This does not speak well for the nation.

To address these issues, we are honored to have the President of Transparency International (Malaysia) to speak to us on this vital aspect of nation building. Besides his advocacy of good governance to fight against corruption, Datuk Paul Low is also an elder in his local church.
