SHARED RESPONSIBILITY
Pastoral Letter To All NECF Members

The events of the past week can be described as nothing short of stunning and miraculous. Given the insurmountable odds stacked against the possibility of changing the incumbent government of the country, we were well aware the battle for GE14 essentially had to be won in the trenches of prayer.

We, the NECF Council wish to thank everyone for doing what they do best – praying. Countless people were involved in the 21.21.21 prayer initiative, as well as the support of our friends from other prayer networks.

Perhaps  Rafidah Aziz summed it up best when she said, “Almighty … answered our collective prayers” (on 10.5.18, as reported by Malaysiakini).

The Church is ecstatic about this new season - it’s like rain in dry times. I cannot think of anyone who is not encouraged. Up to today I still see many who are so proud to leave the indelible ink on their finger, showing off their role in the rebirthing of Malaysia.

I recall seeing a video clip on Election Day showing a group of youths at a counting centre comprising of Malays, Indians and Chinese trying to prevent a vehicle from bringing in bags of extra ballot papers. I was overjoyed as I witnessed their passion to do what was right and the thought that came to my mind then was “Shared Responsibility”.

That is the way forward. We have this shared responsibility with others to rebuild this nation.

Humility compels us to acknowledge that we did not do this by ourselves - many others prayed while we did our part. Similarly, this is the same way we need to move forward – everyone to pull his weight and do his part.

Let us be vigilant and not be distracted by petty differences. Let not mockery overtake us when celebrating the dawn of the new day. Let us not forsake petitioning (to our God) to take up positioning. Let us not forget much work remains to be done, and that the answer is not in the hands of our political leaders (though we are thankful for them), but in the hands of the Master of all creation.

My prayer is that when economic prosperity comes our way, it will not be at the expense of our vision for a true Bangsa Malaysia. My hope is that all will now have the desire, will and resolve to not allow race and religion to divide us ever again.

In the days and years ahead, the Church has a major role to play in bringing healing to the land. No nation can become strong, if the salt does not behave like salt, and if our light continues to dim.

Indeed, we believe the Lord has great plans for us, plans for our welfare and not for evil to give us a hope and a future. But such a grand vision cannot be achieved without His Church returning to our basic purpose of existence and that is to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly before God (Micah 6:8).

God bless Malaysia!

Eu Hong Seng
NECF, Chairman.
