“Do not touch any dead body” is the second vow of a Nazarite. What is so significant with this vow? These stood as standards of consecration, even when Levites have backslidden, the Nazarites life speak to them of a lifestyle of separation or consecration. They are to be “holy unto the Lord” throughout the time of their consecration. This becomes an anchor or a mooring for the spirituality of Israel.

How does this vow relate to New Testament principles? How do we pursue this consecrated path? We all agree that the length of our hair does not constitute holiness nor merely being absent to every funeral service in society preserves our purity. A Holy lifestyle is a process. Paul explains this process of pursuing holiness in his letter to the Roman Church.

“I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, HOLY, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service. And be not fashioned according to the world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, and you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1-2)

The main quality that God looks for in a sacrifice is that it is holy. This makes our bodies and service acceptable before him. He further explains that this “separation” starts with transforming our minds. This is where the battle begins and ends. All ministry, all callings or vocations and everything else we do for God can only be acceptable to Him when this mind renewal is taking place. Left to our own finite minds, we always end up short of God’s standards.

“Even so he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be HOLY and without blemish before him in love.” Ephesians 1:4

God looks forward to a Holy church, “That he might present to himself a glorious church, not having a spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but it should be HOLY and without blemish.” Ephesians 5:27
“But like as he who called you is HOLY, you yourselves also be HOLY in ALL MANNER OF LIVING; because it is written, you shall be holy; for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15

So how do we pursue holiness in all manner of living? This is not the path to legalism nor is this the path to total physical separation from the world. It is amazing that to be Holy is to be full of LOVE. In Colossians 3:12, Paul equates the holiness with “a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving each other… and above all things put on LOVE, which is the bond of perfectness.” God is love and God is Holy and we are to be too.

This phase of the Nazarite Training pursues holiness as foundational to living. The 2nd vow of the Nazarite touches every aspect of life. But it is lived in the context of God’s powerful love. Holiness without God’s love is merely legalism. Without love, all these become religious obligation. That is why to be a real disciple of Jesus Christ is to be a “love-slave” of God.

Are you ready to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength? Are you ready to make him Lord of your life in every area? Will you let him use you to change the world through your simple life lived for Jesus a hundred percent? If you are, then it is time to join us in the adventure of gazing upon the beauty of the Holiness of God.
